James Noxon Sr., born in Dutchess County, NY, April 1765, came to
Adolphustown in 1785.  At the age of 22 in December, 1787 he
married Lanor Delong.  One child Maria was born to them.  Here his
wife passed away in 1792 aged 21 years.  In 1794 he married
Elizabeth Dorland, and to them were born ten children. [more about

Norwich, community, Norwich Twp., Oxford Co.  Originally known as
Norwichville...settled by a group of Quaker families from Dutchess
Co., NY.  Among the first to come...were Peter Lossing, Peter DeLong
and Sears Mott.  Lossing and his brother-in-law, Peter DeLong, pur-
chased a tract of 15,000 acres in 1810.  Early in the following year
the Lossing family settled on this land and a few months later they
were joined by the DeLongs and nine other Quaker families..(a
brief history of the settlement follows.)

GARRY DeLONG, b. ca. 1811, son of Peter DeLong, was known as the
first white child born in Norwich.  In 1837, Garry had a small
family of his own, a Tavern in Sodom and 49 patented [acres].
In 1836 he held a minor township office.  In December 1837 he
incited others to rebellion and was jailed at Hamilton on 23 Dec.
Freed on bail on 28 Feb., he fled the country and was indicted, but
soon returned, evidently suffering no legal penalties.

 settlers in the Norwich district.  Hiram (Capron) met Mary.
...on February 12, 1824 they were married in Townshend....Adeline
 DeLong...was a cousin of Mary's.  In 1826, Joseph (Throckmorton)
and Adeline were married.  David DeLong (and others) were all
 Quakers, and had migrated to Canada from Dutchess County...
 Mary DeLong Capron...died on January 27, 1853, in her 54th year."

William Early, proprietor of the Queen's Hotel, Welland, was born in
the township of Clarke, county of Durham, 4th May 1837, and is a
son of Francis Early and Margaret (Delong) Early, who were married
in the year 1834, and reared a family of nine children, viz: Maria,
William, Margaret, Francis, Esther, James, Robert, Gideon and
Edward. The father of the subject of this sketch was born in the
county of Down, Ireland, 25th December, 1810; emigrated to this

Peter DeLong (ca. 1778-1839) of Dutchess County, New York, emigrated
to Upper Canada about 1810, buying, in association with Peter
Lossing, an extensive tract in Norwich, where he raised his family.
In 1837 Peter, who was a farmer and described as "an old and infirm
man and very decriped", owned 1,619 patented acres.  In September
1837 he was  chosen a delegate of the Norwich political union.
After inciting rebellion in Norwich, he fled the province and was
attainted a traitor.  He died in the United States.

Solomon Lossing (1781-1844) was born in Dutchess Co., NY.  When his
father purchased [land] in Norwich about 1810 in association with
Peter DeLong, he moved his family, Solomon included, to the town-
ship.   DeLong and Peter Lossing did much to promote Quaker emigra-
tion to Norwich.  Solomon.....own[ed] in 1837 a flour mill and a
carding machine....serving as commissioner of the Court of Requests
and a magistrate from 1829 onwards.  Jailed at Hamilton on 23 Dec.
1837 on suspicion of having aided the rebels...acquitted...in 1843
elected warden of Brock Dist.  ....Champlain Soc. XII, 1985.

Richard DeLong signed a petition in April 1855 concerning the loca-
tion of the boundary between Murray and Cramahe townships. Richard
Delong signed a petition in March 1858 concering road allowances.
Richard de Long was manager of the Temperance Hotel 1857-1858.
He was also a farmer on lot 4, conc 3.
The United Board of Grammar School trustees met at Mr. Delong's
house May 4, June 21, August 9, Sept. 17, 1858.

land owners in Ameliasburgh.  Willliam DeLong was a man of marked
business ability and at one time owned three hundred acres on the

and died soon after of a broken neck...his daughters received two
lots of fifty acres, son Will the farm where the Waterhouses are,
Havelock the Adams farm and Fred the remainder....Will married

"My bunk was above the four emergency steering wheels," recalls
George DeLong as he tours the after steering compartment on the
Texas (above), similar to his quarters on the Oklahoma.  "A mate

Port Hope, was capsized in the gale of Wednesday at the head of
Simcoe Island, about nine miles from Kingston.  [A description
of the wreck follows, then a list of the crew..] ..and Fred Delong.
All were young men with the exception of he two last have wives and
families of small children living in Port Hope, and Delong lived
in Charlotte.  [A later dispatch confirmed that all hands were

Deborah and his son Ephriam. He leaves his son Arrey one pound. He

remainder of his estate he wills to his daughters Mary Hoyt, Eleanor
Rose and Caroline More and to his grandson Jason Lee Davis.  His
executors are his son Ephriam, his brother-in-law Ephriam Doolittle,
Samuel Noxon, and William Jas Thomas.  Witnesses William Jas Thomas,

remainder of his estate he leaves to his wife Mariah L. Delong.

In her will, Maria leaves daughter Matilda Jane, w/o George Preston,
and son Justus George, various items of property.  She leaves land
in trust for the use of son John, provided that he returns to the
township within six years of her death, rent from the land meanwhile
to be paid to her children, Albert D., Matilda, Jesse and Justus
George. If John dies or does not return, the property is to be sold
& $100 each given to g-ch Justus Harris Delong, Justus George
Preston, & Wilfred Delong. Witnesses Chalmers & Thomas Singleton.
